I'm not sure if your local HD(s) have a 51 cent bin like mine do but there's a treasure trove of MDF, plywood and other scraps for mold building and other jig building duties around the shop. All marked with green paint.

Just picked up some 3/4" (nom.) pine 12 ply plywood already cut into pieces perfect for my latest mold project. Sheet cost around $40.00, 51 cent bin cost around $6.00.

Your not going to find any quarter sawn BRW but for other tasks it's a great resource. I always walk back there before making any wood purchase at HD.

Tell me about it... The Brazilian rosewood at my local HD is all flat and rift sawn.

everyone knows that mdf is more stable when flat sawn, with a nicer figure too, quilting.

The stuff they have in the local HD bins isn't as nice as the stuff that I give to my neighbour to burn in his chiminea.

Thanks for the reminder picked up an 8 by 1 ft sheet of formica covered particleboard for $5 today for making jigs.

Well, all they have here in Texas is Oak, Pine, and some green stuff they call Poplar (Tulip Poplar, really ugly stuff).
It's all pre-culled and outlandishly priced.
Have not seen a scrap bin yet.

Here's a 4 piece top, 4 consecutive cuts. Made from brace stock that I bought from Madinter. I think it translates at about $5 US. Pretty much zero runout as it planes perfectly well from either direction. Bearclaw as well! Some colour streaks but who cares.

I guess I gotta start thinking outside the box... I have seen sitka spruce sold by local lumber yards, but I dismissed them as being too runout prone. I think maybe I'll get some and go split them myself.

I got some perfectly quartered Doug Fir at Woodcraft for $1/lb not long ago. Now I know I CAN make it into a guitar. Just have to do a lot more jointing.

I got some spruce lathe pieces for free from a split open package at Lowe's. I jointed up an 8 piece top for an ukulele. It feels really nice but I didn't use it because I hadn't noticed a color shift from edge to edge. It ended up looking too stripey since it goes from cream to silverish every 1 1/4 inches. Once I got it jointed and thicknessed it looked like wallpaper. I will certainly use it some day but it will have to go on a colored instrument. I don't think I ever leave a hardware type store without looking in on the softwoods for brace wood.

Put the green poplar in the sun for about 5 days... light green goes to honey, darker green to a warm brown.

Todd, where did you get red spruce 2x4's?

I think a lot of what is offered in the big box stores must be regional (which makes sense). We have the stock poplar and oak. All the 2x4s and up are Doug Fir, and they have some boards they call "Whitewood" which is obviously some kind of pine. No $0.51 bin....our clearance lumber is kept outside in the zero humidity, triple digit heat. The boards are really knarly.

I think the 2x4 lumber is very regional and also probably subject to differences in the ordering contract/management of different stores. The 2x4s at my HD seem to have changed about 5 years ago. Now they all look like they came from trees planted yesterday. Just about every one of them has pith in the center and is filled with knots. It looks like there is a plantation nearby that is growing 2x4 sided saplings and cutting them down as soon as possible.

2x4's in Taiwan are essentially scrap white pine that has been glued together... can't use it for anything but construction.

I get nice 6 ft , 2 by 3 englemann spruce from homeless depot and resaw it on the 1/4. for $2.30. The brand name is stimson and they have mills in idaho and oregon.
